What Causes Water Hardness?
Hard water is due to high levels of dissolved metals in the water supply. When the water is heated, the calcium-magnesium ions are separated and attracted to the sides. This creates the crusty white deposits, which we know as limescale.
Problems Associated With Hard Water
Thin layers of limescale around heating elements in kettles or coffee makers can prolong the time it takes to heat water. In turn, this will increase the energy needed to heat that volume. You can save money by removing and/or preventing limescale buildup around heating elements. Plus, the level of dissolved minerals in water supply can affect the flavor of hot drinks like tea or coffee.

There are many choices available.
Chemical Descalers – available in various forms. The descalers can also be used inside kettles. Nitric Acid is used to inject directly into irrigation systems by agricultural or horticultural users.
Water softeners have an organic resin which is primed by sodium ions. These ions are then released as water passes through the softener in exchange for Calcium or Magnesium. The sodium ions are exchanged and the resin is then recharged in a salt solution. This salt solution can only be used to wash the water, and not for drinking or cooking.
Electronic water conditioners – These are either wrapped around permanent magnetic magnets that emit an electromagnetic field or wrapped around a cold feed pipe. A coil is attached with electronics that emit a range frequency. Both systems prevent metal ions from forming deposits inside pipes or appliances by keeping them in suspension.
EM Ceramics – These are simple pieces of ceramic that have undergone a special treatment. The resultant ceramic has a powerful effect upon the water’s metalions. They are prevented from forming mineral clusters if heated and thus the scale. The EM Ceramic also has a descaling function and can affect existing limescale, causing them gradually to dissolve.
